Pemberton Wineries with Cellar Doors
Lost Lake Wines
Lost Lake nestles in the valley of Eastbrook, an area identified by Dr John
Gladstones (Senior Agronomist, Department of Agriculture, Western Australia)
as being an excellent area for wine grape production due to the higher
altitude and rich loamy/gravel soils. The area also receives higher than
average rainfall and has long warm days with cool nights. The 8ha vineyard
is dry grown and produces around 50 tonnes of high quality fruit each year,
all of which goes into the Lost Lake distinctive Ammonite label. Lost Lake
specialises in the cool climate varieties of Sauvignon blanc, Chardonnay,
Pinot, Shiraz, Cabernet and Merlot. The vineyard is run by Steve Masters,
with help from the rest of the family during the busy times. As a result we
are able to give our vines the attention they deserve, and most work is done
by hand including leaf plucking, fruit thinning, tucking in and pruning.
Guinea fowl provide substantial help with pest management and help us keep
our vineyard in pristine condition.
The Lost Lake Winery is a soaring cedar and limestone building that
incorporates the Winery, Cellar Door and Deck Restaurant within the same
area. The winery faces east to catch the morning sun with the Cellar Door
protecting it from the afternoon sun so it remains cool during the summer
months. Vintage is usually from late February through to the end of March
though this can vary depending on the season. The winery crushes
approximately 50 tonnes of Estate grown fruit with a crush capacity of 150
tonnes. The 2011 vintage saw winemaker Katie Masters crush 65 tonnes for the
Lost Lake label. The fruit was sourced predominantly from our vineyard, with
a few select parcels coming in from vineyards in the surrounding area. Our
red wines are matured predominantly in French oak and the chardonnay
undergoes barrel fermentation and maturation also in French oak. The
unoaked, aromatic whites are fermented in stainless steel tanks, as is our
'Honey Merlot', the perfect wine for those with a sweet tooth.
Lost Lake is gaining a reputation for creating premium, cool climate, fruit
driven wines that are popular with both wine judges and our loyal customers.
