Winery Overview
Husband and wife team, David and Carolyn Brown celebrate Padthaway in their estate-grown, Landaire and Eliza wines. David’s father was the first independent grape-grower in this cool-climate, limestone-rich wine region. Thus, with two generations of unrivalled experience of the area, Carolyn and David know how to coax thrilling fruit from their vines. The next generation; Daniel and Lara are already working in the business.
The historic Padthaway Estate homestead is at the centre of the vineyards which produce Landaire’s wines. The homestead’s winery houses Australia’s only Coquard-type wine press, and this is used each vintage to produce the base wines for the Eliza sparkling wines.
The Landaire brand offers a small range of premium, estate-grown table wines. Two traditional method sparkling wines are offered under the Padthaway Estate “Eliza” brand.
Landaire’s wines are hallmarked by the soil and climate in which they grow. Free-draining red sand over limestone bedrock, the south-east’s famed ‘terra rosa’, combines with southerly latitude and proximity to the Southern Ocean to grow grapes with flavour, character and the all-important balancing acidity. David and Carolyn’s focus on producing the ultimate expression of their vineyards sees them working the vines by hand throughout the year and limiting the yield to ensure that character shines through.
If viticulture is hands-on, so too is winemaking. Carolyn makes the picking decisions and errs on the low-side compared with many. Thus are Landaire’s wines brighter and fresher with that limestone minerality stamp. All wines are vegan-friendly.
Chardonnay leads the whites and is ably supported by Pinot Gris and Vermentino. Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, the region’s classics, shine but Graciano and Tempranillo have proved themselves worthy of the Landaire brand. Eliza Blanc de Blancs and Eliza Rose, both vintage-dated traditional method sparkling wines, complete the range.
