Nick Segger spent years hunting for the perfect vineyard, before finding it in the cool hills of Orange. Now he’s making a mark with diverse wines that run from Arneis to Shiraz.

Having grown up on an organic farm, Nick has a deep respect for the land. After buying a vineyard in the Orange wine region in 2016, he and his wife Tanya started converting it to organics. They’ve built their Nashdale Lane label on ethical, sustainable practices and bring a personal touch, from hand-picking grapes to pouring wine in the cellar door.

Bottling a moment in time

For Nick and Tanya, wine is about experiences and memories as much as it’s about flavour profiles. Their wines include vivid descriptions – the Chardonnay evokes “crisp white linen, long lunch into dinner”, while the Tempranillo evokes “ancient terracotta soils, spirited gatherings”.

“Wine to me is very much about people, places and moments in time,” says Nick.

Nick and Tanya’s journey as wine producers was sparked by their own moments and memories. Having grown up on a major organic fruit and vegetable farm in the UK, Nick has always had a love for the land. In 1999, he and Tanya worked a harvest in Tuscany, and were inspired to run their own vineyard.

The pair spent years searching for the right place, while Tania worked as a journalist and Nick in IT (his knack for tech means you’ll often see drones keeping birds away from the vines). In 2016, with their two kids in tow, they bought a vineyard in New South Wales’ high-altitude, cool-climate Orange wine region.

It’s a picturesque spot in the foothills of an extinct volcano, surrounded by orchards, undulating vineyards and grazing cows. They’ve since converted an old apple packing shed into a cellar door and built two luxury cabins among the vines.

“Orange is a beautiful place to live and has a progressive, fast-moving wine scene,” says Nick. “People are always looking to add value by thinking a little bit differently.”

The vineyard’s rich volcanic soil and pure mountain air produce elegant wines, including Arneis, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. And although Nick and Tanya are newcomers to Orange, they’re already making a mark.

“Our philosophy is to deliver exceptional cool-climate wines across all the varieties we grow,” says Nick. “There’s certainly something very romantic about the art of making beautiful wines in this beautiful location.”
