The pop of a cork, the splash of foam, the bead of fine bubbles – there’s nothing quite like a glass of fizz. And Australian sparkling wine is shining brighter than ever.

Australia has been making sparkling wine since the 1800s and today we’re one of the world’s top producers. Makers in cooler-climate regions craft styles to suit every occasion – from bright bubbly that’s perfect for a picnic, to ultra-premium special-occasion wines.

Style and Character

Most Australian traditional method (or méthode traditionelle) sparkling wine is made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes. But there’s a vast array of other styles, including the unique sparkling Shiraz, sparkling rosé, funky petillant-naturel (made using ancient techniques) and vibrant wine styles made from all manner of grapes.

Ageing

Australia’s prestige sparkling wines, created in cool climates using traditional methods (or méthode traditionelle)) can be aged for many years, often developing savoury, toasty flavours. Premium sparkling red wines can also be aged for 10 years or more and will become smooth and velvety with spicy, dark fruit flavours. Sparkling wine is delicate so store it in a cool, dark and dry place where the temperature doesn’t fluctuate. Wines sealed under cork should be stored lying down.

Drinkability

Often associated with celebrations, most Australian sparkling wine is made for early drinking and is ready to enjoy straight away. Sparkling wine pairs well with all sorts of foods. And with a variety of styles at different price points, it’s perfect for any occasion – from picnics and barbecues to dinner parties and more.
