The Adelaide Hills is a hub of winemaking innovation and Turon White is one of the most exciting young winemakers to emerge from the region in recent years.
On a visit to the Adelaide Hills when he was 14, Turon fell in love with the lush and leafy Adelaide Hills – a very different place from the dry fields of the farming community where he grew up. He studied winemaking at university and knew all along he wanted to make wine in the hills he had discovered. Today, he and his wife Alex run one of Australia’s best up-and-coming wineries.

At home in the hills

After graduating, Turon worked at several wineries, including in the US and Hungary, but he always knew he’d come home to the Adelaide Hills. In 2013, he and his wife Alex established their own winery.

Turon Wines shot out of the gate, quickly building a reputation for small-batch premium wines including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. It was named one of Australia’s top three new wineries in James Halliday’s 2019 Wine Companion, and Turon was named in the 2019 Young Gun of Wine Top 50 list.

Turon’s passion shines through in his wines.

“I love that winemaking is always changing, it’s always evolving, there’s always a new challenge, you’re never sitting still,” he says. “It’s something you can do until the day you die.”

Sourcing pristine fruit from different sites within the Adelaide Hills, Turon uses minimal-intervention techniques to showcase the best of each variety and the diversity of the region.

“I like to make very refined wines but I also like to push the boundaries,” he says. “I think authenticity is really important. I want to make wines that the Adelaide Hills excels at.

“We’ve got really good natural sunlight, a beautiful climate, really good rainfall, and it’s producing, I think, some of the most exciting wines. There’s a lot of energy in the region and a lot of chances for discovery and creating new wines.”

From the outset, Turon and Alex wanted to be collaborative and contribute to the local wine community. They created The Hills Handcrafted Collective and made their winery a shared space where young winemakers can rent space and equipment, and share knowledge.

“I think the Australian wine community is an incredibly generous one,” says Turon. “There’s a lot of camaraderie … Everyone works towards the greater good of the industry.”
