When she was nine, Victoria was asked by her grandfather what she wanted to be when she grew up. Angove family legend has it that she looked him in the eye and said, “I’m going to run your winery for you, Grandpa.” Cut to today and Victoria is Joint Managing Director of Angove Family Winemakers with her brother Richard. With a commerce degree and extensive work experience overseas, Victoria joined the business in 2001 and has been involved in export, domestic sales, marketing and public relations. She’s well and truly putting her stamp on the family business.
Growing up, Victoria was fascinated by her father’s stories of international travel when he was managing export sales for the family business. Since then, she’s had a passion for the customer side of wine.
“We export to about 25 different markets, and to learn about people’s lives, and the different cultures around the world, I’ve always had a great love for that,” she says. “I hope to gift that to my children as well because the more that you learn about other cultures, I think the more tolerant you become.”
Victoria’s great-great-grandfather established Angove Family Winemakers in 1886 and Victoria is the fifth generation to work in the family business, alongside her younger siblings, Richard and Sophie. Together, they’re bringing an increased focus on regionality, putting the McLaren Vale wine region at the heart of their business.
“If you look back in time, every generation has brought something new to the business and a different focus,” says Victoria. “As my brother, sister and I look forward, we’re really focused on very high-quality wines, single-vineyard wines and wines that speak to this beautiful region here in McLaren Vale.
“We believe it to be the best grape-growing region in Australia. It is a stunning region, from the most northern tip to the southern tip.”
Every decision Victoria makes in the business is driven by her passion for building something that will exist for future generations.
“The most important thing is the future sustainability of our family business, but also the Australian wine industry,” she says. “Nothing gives me more joy than watching my 10-year-old and eight-year-old running through our vineyards. We are really working on building a business that has longevity. We’ve had 133 years and we’re looking forward to many more.”
