Read on for more about Orange.
Sitting 600 to 900 metres above sea level, Orange has one of the highest vineyard areas in Australia. Its continental climate gives it a natural advantage: warm summer days, cool nights and dry autumn conditions make it ideal for grape growing.
The Orange wine region is centred on the city of Orange, about three-and-a-half hours west of Sydney. Its undulating landscape is dominated by the extinct volcano, Mount Canobolas.
Orange’s cool climate makes for mild summers, picturesque autumns and cold winters.
The rich, volcanic soils of Orange vary widely but largely fall into clays, loams and patches of terra rossa.
Chardonnay is a superstar wine of the region, growing well at all elevations and producing a diverse range of styles, from crisp and elegant through to robust and full-flavoured.
This is Orange’s most planted variety and makes full-flavoured red wines of vibrant colour, with flavours of cherry, plum and chocolate.
These elegant red wines have intense flavours of cherry and blackberry and can be aged for many years. Cabernet is also often blended with Merlot.
This variety grows well in Orange’s cool climate, producing aromatic white wines with strong tropical fruit flavours.
