Welcome to one of the world’s most spectacular wine regions: a pristine environment producing world-class wines.
The Great Southern wine region is vast, stretching from dramatic coastal cliffs and turquoise water to national parks, mountain ranges and sprawling farms. Tucked into the bottom of Western Australia, it's home to some of the world’s rarest plants and animals.
The beauty and diversity of the landscape plays out in the region’s wines too. The Great Southern is made up of five subregions, each producing distinct wine styles. But they have one thing in common: these are Australian wines at their elegant, age-worthy best.
The Great Southern is a vast, low-lying region with a broadly Mediterranean climate. Climatic conditions vary though, from the temperate, ocean-influenced subregions of Albany and Denmark, to the inland areas of Mount Barker, Porongurup and Frankland River, which have warmer days and cooler nights.
The Great Southern wine region is vast and diverse and provides an ideal environment for growing high-quality grapes. Located in the south-western corner of Australia, it’s a five-hour drive from Perth, or an hour’s flight from Perth to Albany.
The weather is quite temperate, with warm summer days and cool, pleasant winters. Being a coastal region, conditions can vary from sunshine to storms and winds.
Soils are generally brown to grey-brown sandy loams that are moderately fertile.
Savoury cool-climate Shiraz is one of many premium wines produced in this vast, diverse region, enriched with spice and peppery notes to produce an elegantly light wine.
This variety thrives across the region, producing age-worthy wines of deep colour and intense flavour. Many benefit from several years in the bottle to let their flavours soften and develop.
Riesling vies with Shiraz as Great Southern’s signature wine. It is crisp and refreshing with intense citrusy flavours, and ages superbly over 10 years or more.
These elegant, excellent wines are produced in a diversity of styles across the five subregions. Most can be aged for five years or more.
