Three hours from Perth, Margaret River was once a hidden oasis, occupied by dairy farmers and surfers. In the 1950s and 60s scientists deemed it ideal for growing high-quality grapes and things moved fast.
Today it’s home to more than 150 wineries, making premium wine, and visitors sometimes outnumber locals. It’s renowned for its elegant Cabernet Sauvignon and full-flavoured white wines – perfect with the exceptional local produce.
Right on the coast, Margaret River is low and flat, with a moderately warm Mediterranean climate that’s kept cool by the ocean, which surrounds the region on three sides. Its climate is ideal for growing top-quality grapes.

The Mediterranean climate makes the weather pleasant all year long. Summer is warm and dry, cooled down by afternoon sea breezes, and winter is mild. Most rain falls in winter but there’s plenty of sunshine too.
Margaret River’s ancient soils are low in nutrients and ideal for growing high-quality grapes. They’re predominantly deep and well-drained.
Margaret River Chardonnay is world class, with zingy acidity and intense flavours of citrus and stone fruit. Many Chardonnay wines here are richer and more full-flavoured than the leaner, cool-climate styles.
This classic white blend is one of Margaret River’s signature styles and helped put the region on the wine map. It’s a refreshing wine with flavours of tropical fruits and citrus.
This is the hero variety in Margaret River, and almost every wine producer makes one. It’s typically a powerful wine rich with flavours of cedar, blackcurrant and herbs, and can be aged for decades.
