Wine Description
Pinot Noir was first planted in the Nursery Block at Best’s in the 1860’s. It is believed that the these Pinot Noir cuttings were sourced from some of the finest vineyards in Burgundy. The original Best’s plantings are now thought to be the oldest Pinot Noir vines in the world, and one of these clones is thought to exist nowhere else in the world. The fruit for this wine comes from 1980 and 1987 Pinot Noir plantings in the Concongella vineyards, at Best’s Great Western and the 1997 plantings at the elevated vineyard at Rhymney.

Similarly, good value Pinot Noir is largely an oxymoron. Not at Best’s Wines. I anticipated another thin, overly medicinal, mezcal-soused excessive whole bunch number as is the bane at this price and often beyond. Instead, I found transparency, vibrant red fruits, florals and best, beautifully managed tannins. Real tannins.
Pretty aromas of plums, red cherries, aniseed, musk and lilacs. Medium-bodied and plump, yet buoyed by subtle astringency and freshness. Reminiscent of better expressions from Baden. A delightful pinot that offers stunning value. It could be twice the price.

Winemaker's Bio
Hailing from the NSW cool- climate wine region of Orange, Jacob began working in vineyards from the age of 14. He moved to Sydney to begin an electrical apprenticeship before returning home, where he was offered a maintenance position at Phillip Shaw Wines. After a few months, he joined the vintage team for the 2016 harvest and instantly fell in love with the industry. He worked a further five vintages with Phillip Shaw Wines under the tutelage of Nadja Wallington and the Shaw Family. Completing his degree in Oenology, Jacob spent a vintage in California’s Sonoma Coast, before joining Best’s Great Western in 2021.
