Wine Description
HEAD RED is a barrel cull from Barossa vineyards including 'The Blonde', 'The Brunette' and ‘The Contrarian’ single vineyard wines. The wine always receives 12 months barrel age in a new French foudre (2250L) with predominantly older French hogsheads for the balance, allowing the vintage and terroir to show clearly. It’s also a chance for Alex Head to play with the old adage, 'The whole is greater than the sum of its parts’. Certainly the best value and most traditional wine style of the portfolio. Bottled unfined and unfiltered under Stelvin capsule.
Accolades
James Halliday 96/100: There's a lot happening here, all of it good. 80% is sourced from the Eden Valley, 20% the Barossa Valley, co-fermented on skins for 14 days, matured in French oak (10% new), the barrel size ranging from 225l to 2250l. There's a poultice of red and black fruits and ribbons of fine, ripe tannins. You can't deny a wine like this.
Winemaker's Bio
Alex Heads pathway was unusual - a degree in biochemistry from Sydney University, then experience with wine retail, importers and an auction house, but it explains why he makes such elegant wines. "The inspiration has come from the Cote-Rotie in the Northern Rhone Valley." - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2021
