Wine Description
We were the first to plant Barbera here in the Hunter Valley in 1998 with cuttings from an original Italian clone. This variety has made itself right at home on a streak of red volcanic soil, sustainably farmed on a three hectare block within our Ceres Hill vineyard behind the winery. In our maritime climate, Barbera produces a medium bodied wine with vibrant black fruits, savoury notes and great acidity. True to its Italian heart it loves nothing more than good food and company.
Winemaker's Bio
Andrew Margan established Margan Wines in 1996 with life and business partner Lisa in the Broke Fordwich region of the Hunter Valley.
From humble beginnings, Margan is now a leading NSW wine brand renown for outstanding wine quality and a focus on innovation. They boast 100 hectares of distinguished vineyards, all certified Sustainably Farmed. Most of the vines are old, low yielding and grown on the ancient volcanic soil of the Fordwich Sill, creating a unique signature style that defines Margan wines.
Andrew’s winemaking philosophy is focused firmly on making single vineyard wines from his own grapes with all wines ‘estate grown and made’ on site. He makes wines of concentration, structure, balance and texture that are modern expressions but with a nod to the traditions of the Hunter. His favourite wines are those that display excellent varietal definition and reflect the soil they are grown in and their sense of place. He has favourite vintages rather than favourite wines although the uniquely regional styles of savoury, medium bodied Shiraz and pristine, long lived Semillon are both hard to go past.
Andrew was introduced to the wine industry at a young age as his parents had vineyards in the Hunter in the 70’s and his father Frank Margan was one of Australia’s first wine journalists. With two University degrees under his belt, a hands-on apprenticeship with the legendary Murray Tyrrell and several years of working in European wineries he has done over 50 vintages.
Andrews career highlights include being awarded the Hunter Valley Viticulturalist of the Year in 2015 and the more recent news of his (now adult) children coming home to work in the business.
