Wine Description
The fruit for ‘The Brunette’ Shiraz comes from a truly unique vineyard site on the top of Moppa Hill which faces east (morning sun), planted with 1654 Shiraz clone to approximately 2 hectares. The soils are lean red clays with ironstone and quartz which produce optimum conditions for dark, savoury fruits and fine, structured tannins. 10% whole-bunches are retained in open fermenters with daily foot-treading and hand-plunging for 3 weeks. Elevaged for 17 months in 33% new 228L barrels, the rest 1 & 2 year old.
Accolades
James Suckling 96/100: “Aromas of rich blackberries, cocoa powder, rust, dark chocolate, red and dark plums and tar. This has a very deep, almost chasmic shape on the palate with some long tannins that wind out deep into the finish. Rich dark-plum, berry and chocolate flavours. Ironstone and clay soils of Moppa here. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
Winemaker's Bio
Alex Heads pathway was unusual - a degree in biochemistry from Sydney University, then experience with wine retail, importers and an auction house, but it explains why he makes such elegant wines. "The inspiration has come from the Cote-Rotie in the Northern Rhone Valley." - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2025
