Wine Description
‘Wilton’ was an old town in Flaxman Valley and the vineyard was planted on the Hill above the town, hence the property name ‘Wilton Hill’. Once a Gold-Mine with 40 workers there are many natural springs and also ancient Yacca plants which are protected (can be up to 500 years old). The vineyards are farmed sustainably and use organic practices. The oldest vines are 106 years and a small Shiraz block planted in 1929 provides the fruit for HEAD Wines ‘Wilton Hill’ Shiraz.
Accolades
97/100 Huon Hooke " Very deep, youthful purple/red hue, with essency dark plum, dried herb and black cherry aromas, including a distinctive note of thyme. The palate is full-bodied and quite muscular, powerful and concentrated, but quite elegantly stated, without too-obvious oak, while the tannins are supple and measured. A delicious wine. Very Eden Valley in its aroma profile. Cellaring is strongly recommended, although it's a style that is approachable and highly enjoyable already. 97Pts Huon Hooke"
Winemaker's Bio
Alex Heads pathway was unusual - a degree in biochemistry from Sydney University, then experience with wine retail, importers and an auction house, but it explains why he makes such elegant wines. "The inspiration has come from the Cote-Rotie in the Northern Rhone Valley." - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2027
