Inspired by a life in wine during a stint of winery work experience during high school, Paul studied agricultural science at university and travelled extensively through California’s wine regions. Working in Tuscany for several months, he fell in love with bold Italian reds. Now he’s chief winemaker at a leading Riverland winery, where he’s also part of conservation projects.
At Banrock Station in the Riverland wine region, grape growers work alongside rangers who look after the vast wildlife and wetland preservation area. This focus on the environment is one of the things that drew Paul to the business. He also loves making the bright, generous wines that Banrock Station is known for.
“I’m most passionate about making wine for people that don't know wine, introducing people to wine,” says Paul. “Hopefully broadening their understanding and getting them passionate about trying different varieties.”
Paul joined Banrock Station in 2004, where he leads the winery team in producing full-flavoured, great-value wines poured around the world. He’s also part of Banrock Station’s Environmental Trust program, which has taken him to places like Canada and Hong Kong to work on conservation projects.
South Australian born and bred, he’s a champion for the Riverland wine region.
“The Riverland is the engine room of the Australian wine industry; it’s critical to its success,” says Paul. “And it can make wines of a very high distinction and can also make wines that are very easy drinking. So, it should have something for everyone.”
In a region reliant on irrigation from the Murray River, and affected by a changing climate, Banrock Station is helping to lead the way in exploring alternative techniques and grape varieties.
“In the Riverland, we’re drivers of change,” says Paul. “We’re always looking at new opportunities. I think the Riverland’s been fundamental in looking at Mediterranean varieties like Montepulciano, Vermentino, Albarino. Diversity in the Riverland is fundamental to its success.
