Every year on the last Friday of April, it’s International Viognier Day. Started by an Australian winery, this young tradition seeks to celebrate the elegance and power of this white variety.
Since Viognier was first planted in Australia in the 1970s, this native French variety has gone from strength to strength. It’s challenging to grow and get right in the winery, but in the hands of skilful winemakers, Viognier wine is silky and seductive.
Viognier from Australia is often blended with Shiraz, a tradition brought over France’s Rhône Valley. While this blend only features a small percentage of Viognier compared to Shiraz, the white variety’s fragrance and vibrancy has a notable impact on the typically intense red variety.
