Cape Mentelle
Winery Overview
Cape Mentelle is one of the pioneering estates in the Margaret River region, having been established by the Hohnen family in 1970. From the start it played a leading role in defining the regional style of Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon that now stands alongside the world’s best. Consecutive Jimmy Watson Trophies in the early ‘80s did much to build the reputation for both Cape Mentelle and the region. Our wines reflect their origins and regionality and we have over 150 hectares of vines across four vineyards within the Margaret River region. Primary plantings are cabernet sauvignon, semillon and sauvignon blanc, with smaller amounts of shiraz, chardonnay, merlot, cabernet franc and zinfandel. Building on the winery’s tradition of pioneering spirit and uncompromising commitment to excellence, our team are taking up the challenge to create the best reflection of what our vineyards deliver. This experienced and innovative team are always progressing with forward looking ideas, handcrafted wines and an international perspective. Emphasis on fruit quality, sustainable viticulture and innovative technology in the winery are all an integral part of the quality control and vision in the pursuit of excellence. In addition, we all share a love for the land and a deep commitment to sustainability that underpins every decision and operation.

Chief - Winemaking and Viticulture
A true local. Born in Busselton, a small coastal town just 30 minutes from Margaret River, David began working in vineyards at 18. The experience sparked a love for wine and viticulture, and he continued to work for local wineries while completing his Bachelor of Science in Viticulture and Oenology at Curtin University. Aside from his experience in Margaret River, David has also worked in the Rutherglen and Great Western regions of Victoria and in the Rhone Valley, France.
Joining Cape Mentelle in April 2014, David shares our dedication to sustainability and innovation. He was a founding member of the Sustainability Sub-Committee for the Margaret River Wine Association and, in 2020, received the Margaret River Wine Show Viticulture Excellence Award.
With over 20 years of experience under his belt, David is focused on leading a strong, proud and dedicated team. His passion for the legacy of Cape Mentelle is at the forefront, driving uncompromising quality across the vineyards and winery and ensuring this is reflected in every bottle.
When he is not in the vineyards, he enjoys spending time with his young family and being in or on the ocean.
