Winery Overview
In 1997 Kevin and Helen O’Brien bought a small vineyard and winery in McLaren Vale which was on Kangarilla Road. When they would tell people where it was Kangarilla Road was always part of the conversation. The name stuck. Kangarilla is the aboriginal Kaurna people’s word meaning place of rest with water and trees and is the name taken by a small town - so small there is no pub -10 kms from our vineyard.
The original design for their label was conceived by Matthew Remphrey of Parallax Design and has been maintained and styled by Abra Remphrey of Detour Design. The black and white label design appears quite simple but on closer inspection you will find that each variety of grape has its own particular morphology, or the way the leaf looks. Each different wine they make reflects the varietal integrity as expressed by the leaf on the bottle.
Kangarilla Road is a member of Sustainable Winegrowers of Australia. They have always believed in having an environmentally conscience and in the long term sustainability of our vineyards. It is just something that makes sense.
Their wines are made in a nurturing manner with care and attention to detail. They want to get the very most from the grapes in order to make the best wines possible in the style that we all love. Wines that have varietal integrity. They are sometimes diverse but always approachable, authentic and delicious.
Kevin, who graduated from Winemaking at Roseworthy in 1982, makes the wines in a more restrained style with a nod to the natural generosity of the McLaren Vale wine growing region.
While the range of wines is diverse and they all share the similarity of being smooth, elegant and consistent.

Winemaker Bio
Kevin O’Brien was born and educated in Adelaide, South Australia. While studying a Bachelor of Science degree at Adelaide University it was suggested to him that it would be beneficial to him to actually make wine as he enjoyed drinking it a so much. He moved his degree to the Roseworthy Campus and graduated in Oenology in 1982. Kevin has not looked back and has worked in many aspects of the wine industry but his first love is winemaking.
In 1997 Kevin and his wife Helen bought Kangarilla Road Winery in McLaren Vale, an area known for its generous reds. Kevin is interpreting the fruit in a more restrained style and he is now making the sort of wines he loves to drink including zinfandel, primitivo, sangiovese, montepulciano, fiano and of course cabernet, shiraz and chardonnay.
