Winery Overview
Established in 2009 on Australia’s Mornington Peninsula, Polperro Wines is the home of estate grown, single vineyard expressions of unique sites and Even Keel, our label celebrating cool climate regions of Australia.
Polperro and Even Keel Wines are owned by Winemaker, Sam Coverdale and his wife, Emma Phillips. Our wines are hand-crafted, our business is family owned.
When Sam speaks of the individual vineyards, he speaks of character. Taking the time to read each individual site, interpret them, play to their strengths and unlock their potential. That superior tacit understanding of site, combined with precision in the winery create wines of character and true expressions of place.
Of the nine vineyards we manage on the Mornington Peninsula, five produce our single vineyard cuvees. The topography is richly diverse with varying altitudes of verdant hinterland, cooled by salty winds-bounded as it is on three sides by ocean.
The cool maritime climate and the deep fertile and volcanic soil - along with sandier brown and yellow varieties - provide ideal conditions for growing world-class Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris.
Sustainability is at the core of our vineyard management; a light and delicate touch. We nurture our land and increase soil capacity, life and fertility, through ecologically respectful, organic, regenerative farming practices.
Our Talland Hill vineyard is Certified Organic & Biodynamic through NASAA (National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia). We are well underway to achieving certification across all of our other managed vineyards.

Winemaker Bio
Sam’s winemaking journey began as a vintage cellar hand at Tyrrell’s at the age of 18, before going on to complete degrees in Business from the University of Queensland and Wine Science at Charles Sturt University.
Sam joined Hardy’s, working across several Australian wine regions, then exploring winemaking in Spain, Italy and France. Through this technical grounding and experience, Sam developed a strong sense of the wine he loves to drink and make wine that sings of a time and a place.
He established Even Keel in 2006 with a view to create balanced and elegant wines that represent the unique, cool climate regions of Australia.
Since 2009, he has specialised in premium, single-vineyard wines from the Mornington Peninsula, under the Polperro label.
Along with Assistant Winemaker & Vineyard Manager, Brent Osbourne and their team, Polperro is holistic in its approach. Tending to every aspect in the winery and in the vineyard, Sam is of the belief that great wine is made on the vine.
