At Thistledown Wines we believe every wine tells a tale. We narrate the stories and harness the energy of South Australia's iconic vineyard sites. We hand-craft detailed, pure & precise Grenache, Shiraz & Chardonnay. We are a Halliday wine Companion 5 red star winery and in The Real Review Top Wineries of Australia. We are certified members of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia.
Since 2006 Thistledown have hand-made delicious, energetic wines – all sourced from iconic vineyard sites in McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and the Adelaide Hills.
We are founded by two Masters of Wine, Giles Cooke MW and Fergal Tynan MW, whose vision is to make small batch wines reflecting their personality and that of the ‘place’ and growers.
At our winery in the Adelaide Hills our focus is on crafting premium, small batch, low intervention wines from sites that we believe are special.
It's no secret that we're obsessed with Grenache, particularly the old vine, dry grown stuff in McLaren Vale and Barossa. Our wines are described as 'World Class' and 'Among Australia's very greatest reds.' We have helped nurture the re-invigoration of South Australia’s signature variety. We are self confessed Grenache fanatics!
Additionally we offer a range of wines utilising some of the same fruit sources and winemaking philosophy as Thistledown – Wild & Wilder, Million Suns and Earthsong NZ.
We also have a strong history and pedigree creating of private label creation: developing change labels and new brands.

Giles has travelled the world buying wine and creating engaging new products.
The driving force behind Thistledown, Giles has travelled the world buying wine, consulting on packaging and winemaking. Although his first love is Spain, something has always drawn him back to Australia, where much of his early travel in the wine trade was done.
Splitting his time between Australia and the UK, Giles has his hands in most of the pies. Working with all the growers, running harvest, creating winemaking specs and packaging, he is not one to rest easily!
