Few people have given more to the Australian wine community than Iain Riggs. Over almost five decades, he’s helped boost our global reputation, redefined Hunter Valley wine, and inspired a new generation.

A wine industry veteran, Iain Riggs has helped drive Australian wine forward and set it up for a bright future. He had a passion for winemaking from an early age and started his career in the 1970s, working in the wine regions of Langhorne Creek and McLaren Vale. Then he joined Brokenwood winery in the Hunter Valley and never left. Today he’s recognised for taking Brokenwood and the Hunter Valley to new heights.

Leading the way

Over almost 40 years, Iain led the rise and rise of Brokenwood winery, helping to turn it into an icon and redefining Hunter Valley wine with his acclaimed Semillon and Shiraz. He became a leader in the region, championing its wines and building its reputation.

“The Hunter Valley is one of the most magic vine-growing areas in Australia,” says Iain. “We are Australia’s oldest commercial wine region. We have some of the oldest vines in the world. We make such unique wine styles with our early-picked Semillon and Shiraz. It is one of those magnificent regions where everyone helps everyone.”

Passionate about pushing the quality of Australian wine even further, Iain has been heavily involved in the community not just as a winemaker but also as a judge, mentor, educator and thought leader. He’s chaired industry organisations and won too many awards to list. In 2018, he was named as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).

Under Iain’s leadership, Brokenwood winery became a ‘wine university’, training new generations of winemakers through its annual program for up-and-comers.

“The industry gives us a lot and if we don’t make time available to give back, then the industry is not going forward,” says Iain. “And if everyone hunkers down and doesn’t share their experiences with the younger generation, then the industry’s not going anywhere.”

In July 2020, Iain stepped back from his hands-on roles as Managing Director and Chief Winemaker at Brokenwood, staying on as a director and consultant. Time to pass the baton to the next generation – and maybe make a bit more time for golf.

“I’m just an ordinary golf player, but every good shot you hit is something to bring you back, because next time you might put two good shots together,” says Iain. “Making wine is a bit like that. It will always draw you back.”
