Gold Coast-born Nancy was working in global marketing communications and living in San Francisco when she met her partner Adam, a winemaker, in California’s Napa Valley. They got to know each other over a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon, and eventually moved to Victoria’s Grampians wine region, where Adam grew up. Under their wine label SubRosa, Nancy does “everything except make the wine”.
Wine retreat in the mountains
The mountainous Grampians wine region is home to some of Australia’s finest cool-climate Shiraz grapes, and this was a big drawcard for Nancy and Adam, who launched their label, SubRosa, in 2015.
The name ‘SubRosa’ came from the dictionary, of all places, when they flicked through it for inspiration and stumbled upon the word. It’s a Latin word that means ‘in secret’ (and literally translates to ‘under the rose’, referring to an ancient practice of hanging a rose over a table as a mark of secrecy).
Nancy, a high achiever who sits on the board of directors for the East Grampians Health Service and runs her own communications business, does pretty much everything at SubRosa except make the wine. That’s Adam’s job. An acclaimed winemaker who’s also chief winemaker at the renowned Mount Langi Ghiran winery, Adam crafts small batches of elegant wines. He does everything by hand, producing Shiraz, their signature variety, along with Viognier, Rosé, Cabernet Sauvignon and Nebbiolo.
“Adam is the genius in the winery and I’m the one who wants to share the extraordinary wine that he makes because it’s too good to be kept in the winery,” says Nancy.
Life in the Grampians is a change of pace for Nancy, but having grown up by the beach, she’s always been a nature lover and and is happy to be raising her family in undulating wine country.
“The Grampians is a very unique place,” she says. “It’s only a couple of hours from Melbourne but it seems a lot further away. It’s filled with so much natural beauty and so many moments where you breathe in the country air and just count your blessings for living here.”
