Wine Description
When Bruce Tyrrell purchased this plot of land, in what was then a relatively unknown region, and planted grapevines in its deep-red Cambrian soils there were some who called him a lunatic. Those vines are now producing some of Australia’s finest Shiraz fruit, more than justifying his pioneering move. Dichotomous in its meaning, Lunatiq also refers to the moon’s influence on the rhythms of vine growth and looking to the lunar phases to help determine prime picking times. But this fruity, full and well-rounded Shiraz defies folly and honours the soils that nurtured it. Only made in excellent years, our Lunatiq Shiraz is drawn from the best barrels from the Heathcote vintage, sourced from our oldest blocks. A portion of the fruit was handpicked, with about 20% kept as whole bunches. The remainder was de-stemmed but not crushed in order to preserve as many whole berries as possible. Gentle pump overs during fermentation helped to maximize flavour and colour without over-extracting tannin. The wine was matured in a mixture of old and new French-oak barriques. Rich aromas of dark fruits are married to a full array of pepper and charcuterie notes, all given a subtle lift by the French oak. The palate is rich and soft, with dark fruit, chocolate and a dash of spice. The tannins from the stalks and oak work together seamlessly to give the wine a silky texture and finish.
