Winery Overview
1837 Barossa is an iconic Australian wine producer that commemorates the date on which Colonel William Light, founder of Adelaide and first Surveyor-General of South Australia named the Barossa in December 1837. The Barossa Colonel Light Monument, a life-size bronze monument of Colonel Light on horseback honours the birthplace of Barossa on the estate. Our logo is symbolizing William Light on horseback when pointing towards the Barossa Range when naming them in 1837.
We produce extraordinary wines of distinction which is symbolized by the
cordon sash on each label. Cordon sashes became a distinguishing part of
decorations of uniforms at the time of Colonel William Light and are symbols of
extraordinary achievements and distinction. Generations of our winemakers have dedicated their work to our grand tradition, embodying our heritage of outstanding wine-making in every bottle.
We are located in South Australia, 50 minutes North of Adelaide in the Southern Barossa town Lyndoch. The spectacular 1837 Barossa estate features a modern art trail, Restaurant & Cellar Door, Wine Pavilion & Seminar Center, Wine and gift shop, 1837 Luxury Vineyard Cottages with ATP sized tennis court and probably the best views of the Barossa.
From the Australian Auchli family, who own and operate the winery, to our grape growers and winemakers, we have an immense daily passion about wine. A grand vision was realized with making our iconic Australian wines combined with European elegance and finesse. All our grapes are grown in the GI of the Barossa Wine Region. The Barossa Wine Region consist of the Barossa Valley and the higher altitude Eden Valley. Our red varieties are grown in the Barossa Valley, our white varieties are grown in the cool climate Eden Valley. Our Vineyards are Sustainable Practice Certified granted by NASAA Certified Organic (NCO). The A–graded vineyards are currently undergoing a transformation into EcoVineyards with native plantings. The vineyards of 1837 Barossa are distinguished for their well-structured red-brown clays with calcareous rocks, an ideal condition for premium class vines. This unique terroir has been considered one of the best grape growing regions in the world for more than 150 years now, thanks to the combination of the Barossa Valley’s Mediterranean and the ideal microclimate of each individual 1837 Barossa vineyard.
