Winery Overview
Best’s Wines Great Western is one of Australia’s ‘best kept’ winery secrets. Founded in 1866, it is a family-owned and operated winery with some of the oldest and rarest vines in the world. Shiraz, cabernet and riesling are specialties and it also produces small-parcel wines that are available to taste and purchase at its cellar door. Best’s Concongella Vineyard is home to Henry Best’s original Nursery Block, containing almost 40 different varieties as well as the 1868 plantings of Shiraz and Pinot Meunier. These are among Australia’s most notable vineyard resources.
There’s something very special about the wines from Great Western. The pedigree of its historic vineyards allows Best’s to make elegant, finely structured wines with great intensity and balance. Best’s avoids the heavy-handed use of oak or winery interventions; instead, the winemaking team allows the fruit from Great Western to tell its own story. Like many classic long-lived wines, their best attributes are revealed over time.
Best's flagship wines, the Thomson Family Shiraz and the Bin No. 0 Shiraz have been listed in the Langtons Classification 8 Series. The Thomson Family Shiraz as a First Classified wine and the Bin No. 0 Shiraz as Classified.
This accolade builds on these wines that have been designated “Exceptional” and “Outstanding” respectively in Langtons Classification VII. Best’s Wines is a James Halliday 5-Star Rated Winery and has been awarded Best Value Winery in Australia in the 2021 Wine Companion.

Winemaker Bio
Hailing from the NSW cool- climate wine region of Orange, Jacob began working in vineyards from the age of 14. He moved to Sydney to begin an electrical apprenticeship before returning home, where he was offered a maintenance position at Phillip Shaw Wines. After a few months, he joined the vintage team for the 2016 harvest and instantly fell in love with the industry.
He worked a further five vintages with Phillip Shaw Wines under the tutelage of Nadja Wallington and the Shaw Family. Completing his degree in Oenology, Jacob spent a vintage in California’s Sonoma Coast, before joining Best’s Great Western in 2021. Best’s patriarch, Viv Thomson, and his son Ben, Managing Director and Vineyard Manager, have worked with Best’s winemakers for the last 40 years to ensure continuity of house style while encouraging the winemakers to constantly seek out ways to innovate and improve.
