Genista Wines
Barossa Valley , South Australia
Winery Overview
Genista Wines, a husband-and-wife team made up of Lloyd Broom and Sarah Gregory. Purchasing our single vineyard in the Southern Barossa Valley back in 2014, Genista’s first vintage was our 2017 ‘Taking the Mickie’ Shiraz.
Expanding in 2018 to include our neighbours’ vineyard, we manage a total of 7 acres of vineyard with 6 acres of 30-year-old Shiraz vines and 1 acre of 80-year-old Grenache vines. We now have a range of five different wines from these two outstanding varieties.
The name ‘Genista’ comes from the plant of the same name, with its common name being ‘Broom’. A long running family joke – instead of being 'The Brooms’, we would sometimes refer to ourselves as ‘The Genistas’ when feeling fancy.
Our labels tell our story. ‘Taking the Mickie’ Shiraz is named in recognition of Lloyd’s father, Michael, who has helped prune the vineyard every year since purchase. ‘Duck, Duck, Cat’ Grenache talks of our relationship with the local Barossa Wildlife Rescue, a volunteer-based operation that rescues and rehabilitates injured wildlife and whom we support with donations from every bottle sold. ‘Island’ Rosé details everyone that has played a part in Genista Wines getting off the ground and to where it is today. ‘Noble’ Sparkling Shiraz reflects on Sarah’s family history and the search for our version of gold in Barossa. And ‘The SG’ Shiraz Grenache named after Sarah Gregory, who moved interstate away from everything and everyone familiar to give Lloyd a chance to follow his dream in the Barossa Valley.
Since our first vintage in 2017, our philosophy has remained constant – produce the best quality fruit that we can, handle the resulting ferments and young wines as little as possible while ensuring high quality, and bottle wines showing varietal characteristics, texture and balance.

Winemaker Bio
In his early twenties, Lloyd discovered a taste for wine and his interest in the field grew. During the early days of our relationship, Sarah and Lloyd would often visit cellar doors for tastings and cheese platters, soaking up the winery lifestyle. Lloyd began studying a Bachelor of Viticulture and Winemaking at the Northern Melbourne Institute of Tafe in 2010.
After moving to the Barossa Valley in 2015, Lloyd worked his first vintage, before finding ongoing work further north in the Clare Valley, learning the basics of winemaking and cellar operations. 18 months later Lloyd returned to the Barossa Valley, working for a small family owned and operated business. Continuing to learn the art of winemaking, the small size of the business also exposed Lloyd to all facets of a winery business. After 8 years of experience covering grape growing, winemaking and business administration, Lloyd was well equipped to begin working full time in Genista Wines.
