We are a small family owned and organically certified winery in the heart of Coonawarra. In 1906 my great grandfather, named the family property ‘Koonara’. More than 115 years on, our family still live here surrounded by our vineyards. We are the first in Coonawarra to be Certified Organic, and we have created ecosystems in our vineyards to limit spraying (even organic sprays) and to reduce our carbon footprint. We believe in creating wines which are high quality and age-worthy. All our wines are vegan friendly, low in sulphur and have no (or low) residual sugar.

Koonara is in the process of transition winemaking from Peter Douglas to Peter Weinberg.

What more can be said about the great man Peter Douglas – former head Winemaker at Wynns in Coonawarra for 15 years, he spent vintages in Bordeaux with ‘Chateau Leoville Barton’, Napa Valley with Constellation, both Sicily and Tunisia with ‘Casa Vinicola Calatrasi’ and ‘Puglia’ before returning back home to Coonawarra. A good family friend, and we are privileged to have him as our winemaker. Something not many people know is, our super premium Head Honcho, Cabernet Sauvignon is named after him. Peter Weinberg is a decorated winemaker based in Coonawarra, South Australia, crafting wines for several smaller producers. Originally from Newcastle, he began his career in the Hunter Valley at Mount Pleasant before moving to Coonawarra in 1999. Known for his hands-on approach and passion for the outdoors, Peter guided Brand’s Laira to award-winning success, especially with Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. He now brings his expertise and creativity to the Koonara Wines range, continuing his legacy of excellence in winemaking.
