Wine Description
Ironheart is the flagship Shiraz from Yangarra’s single vineyard estate at the northern edge of McLaren Vale. The vineyard’s cooler climate and sandy ironstone soils produce Shiraz with immense concentration and finesse. Sourced exclusively from Block 15 which lies amongst a gravelly ironstone outcrop (where the North Maslin Sand geology comes to the surface). Hand-picked (21st March), 20% whole bunches, and the remainder has been destemmed, mechanical berry sorted, 30% whole berries and 50% crushed. Open fermenters and on skins for approximately 21 days. A gentle maceration principle of wetting the cap and only draining and returning when reductive. Wild yeast ferment. No pressings are used in this wine. Kept on lees for 16 months in 1 year old foudre. Bottled November 2021. Certified Organic/Biodynamic.
Winemaker's Bio
Peter Fraser has been the winemaker and driving force behind Yangarra since 2000. With a sensitive approach to winemaking, Peter believes attention to detail is essential at every step of farming and making wine. His near obsession with texture and purity drives decisions in the vineyard and innovation in the winery, evidenced by his experimentation with stone and ceramic vessels for fermentation and aging. Recognized for his leadership with Grenache and Shiraz, he has been nominated and awarded “Winemaker of the Year” by global wine publications, including Halliday Wine Companion (2015), Gourmet Traveller Wine (2017), and Wine Enthusiast (2018).
