Winemaker's Bio
Winemaker Kate Morgan’s wine journey began at an early age, with family holidays in Margaret River sparking a curiosity for winemaking. Her interest grew with work experience at Houghton Wines in the Swan Valley while still at High School.
After attaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Viticulture & Oenology she started exploring the world of wine. Kate now has over 20 vintages under her belt covering 10 wine regions in 4 countries. Her experience covers a very diverse range of styles and some memorable experiences, from the steep learning curve that was her first vintage in McLaren Vale, dancing in the old concrete lagars (special port fermenters) while making Port in the Douro Valley, some very frosty conditions making sparkling wine in the UK, the gravity fed barrel storage caves in Oregon, and all the incredible winemakers, viticulturalists and cellar crew she has learnt from on her journey.
Luckily for us at Byron & Harold, she has brought back her wealth of experience to the part of the winemaking world she loves the most, Western Australia, where she has been for the last 12 years.
In 2010 Kate started her own small wine brand, Ipso Facto Wines. This has seen her being a Gourmet Traveller Young Winemaker of the Year finalist and make it into the Top 12 of the Young Guns of Wine competition.
Kate is also involved in judging at wine shows, both on a regional level at the Margaret River Wine Show and Wine Awards of Western Australia, and capital city shows including Perth Royal Wine Awards and Royal Hobart Wine Show. She very much enjoys being a part of these shows, and the opportunity to taste a snapshot of Australian wine quality and styles each year, to test her own palate trying up to 120 wines in a day, and to learn from, and network with, fellow judges.
