Greenock Creek Wines
Barossa Valley , South Australia
Winery Overview
With its first vintage in 1984, Greenock Creek has been producing wines of intensity and character for over 35 years.
Its approach focuses on single-site and single-variety evocations. Classic Barossan styles of Grenache, Mataro, Cabernet and Shiraz are drawn from our estate vineyards in Marananga & Seppeltsfield and select grower partnerships that reflect its viticultural approach.
Greenock Creek is inextricably linked to the heritage of the iconic area in which we work. Vineyards are planted around our 1800s settler’s cottage, Mataro beside one of the earliest colonial shacks and legendary plantings on property that has been farmed since the first white settlement of the region.
Its Roennfeldt Road Shiraz & Cabernet (alongside our mythical Creek Block Shiraz) sit at the peak of its craft. Awarded the perfect 100 from Robert Parker on numerous occasions, these wines speak volumes on its approach to quality and style without compromise.
Greenock Creek’s winemaking approach is classic in that it approaches the wines as the vineyards provide. The winery built in 1995 processes approximately 120 tonnes of fruit with a significant quantity coming from old vines that sit only metres away from the open cement fermenters and basket press used to extract the precious juice.
Myths and legends have sprung up around the vines, some of which were previously supplied to other local luminaries in producing the best of the region, Lehmann’s ’89 Jimmy Watson was sourced from the winery vineyard. Its Creek Block Shiraz is one of the earliest trial plantings of the SA1654 clone which has gone on to become the most widely planted Shiraz in Australia after being developed to suit regional conditions perfectly.
Overall, the story of Greenock Creek gives an insight into the traditions and styles of Barossa and delivers on the regional promise of bold and adventurous wines.

Winemaker Bio
Alex Peel (Chief Winemker) who comes from a long line of farmers, decided that his love of the country (and back-breaking labour) could best be embraced through pursuit of the vinous arts. He completed a Bachelor Degree of Oenology at Waite Campus in 2014 and after working vintage under the legendary Neville Falkenberg at Ross Estate, he accepted the Assistant Winemaker position following a US vintage. After 10 years, and promotion to Head Winemaker, Chateau Yaldara poached him for the role of Chief Winemaker a year into his tenure.
After multiple vintages, making a myriad of wines for the biggest names in the Barossa Wine industry, Alex accepted an offer to helm Greenock Creek Wines in 2019 after the retirement of the founding owners.
Peter Atyeo (Vineyard Manager, Winemaker): “Ads”, a name bestowed upon Peter during his time on a cattle-run in a place called Morgan, about 161 kms north east of Adelaide, is known as a straight-forward, down-to-earth, humble and unassuming bloke.
Working as Company Viticulturist, Vineyard Manager and Winemaker for Greenock Creek Wines since 2007, Peter lives by the well-worn idea that wine is made in the vineyard. Each plot is tended with a view to delivering the highest quality grapes to be converted into wine.
He is dedicated to producing fruit that maintains Greenock Creek’s characterful and intense expression of Barossa wine. Within the vineyard portfolio, Peter manages multiple vineyard sites, with vines ranging from 90 to 130 years old.
At the foundation of Peter’s passion for viticulture is the preservation of these vines to ensure their long-term sustainability and a place in Barossa’s history.
