Wine Description
Cienna is an Australian-developed grape variety, created by the CSIRO in 1972 to thrive in our climate. A cross between Spain’s Sumoll and France’s Cabernet Sauvignon, it is naturally disease-resistant and achieves excellent sugar ripeness, soft tannins, and generous fruit weight. Unlike some sweeter styles of Cienna, our winemaking approach highlights its plush, ripe fruit and vibrant varietal character, balancing softness with freshness on the palate – perfect for those who enjoy fruit generosity without a sweet finish. Fermented to dryness and carefully matured, our Cienna is a relaxed and distinctive style - true to the spirit of discovery that defines our Alpine Road range.
Our Cienna has a wonderful and enticing nose of dark strawberry, blackberry and blueberry fruits. On the palate ripe and juicy flavours of dark plums, blackberries and figs are layered with complex white pepper, oak and liquorice characters. A wine with generosity of spirit, structure and persistence on the finish. Enjoy this wine with a traditional Greek style Moussaka.
Winemaker's Bio
Toni Pla Bou has worked in the wine industry for twenty five years, working for Houghton Wines, Coldstream Hills, Evans & Tate, Berton Vineyards and as a flying winemaker in Corsica, Roussillon, Gaillac and Corbière with Jean Marc Lafage. Studies in Philosophy and French have informed his understanding of wine, in relation to style, aesthetic and cultural value. Having a Catalonian heritage, Toni has always been passionate about wines from either side of the Pyrenean border: Grenache, Tempranillo, Grenache Blanc, Macabeo and more. Through his winemaking, Toni is inspired by the topographical and climatic affinities between the Alpine Valleys and the European Pyrenees.
